mHealth – The Naysayers. The Second in a Series.

“There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home”

Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), in a talk given to a 1977 World Future Society.

I know, I know an anecdote does not a compelling argument make, but when my mother began to text me from her phone, I knew something was up, and now she’s using Facebook on her iPad, heaven help us.

But I hear it all the time, the questions from the naysayers in regards to mobile health…

Will mHealth Revolutionize Health Care? – First in a Series..

There has been an enormous increase in interest in mHealth, particularly the possibility of leveraging mobile phones and wireless devices to improve all areas of health care. As the chart below documents, the projected uptake of smart phones is rapid.

Cell phones and smart phones have already shown that they can change behavior, here are a few interesting points to ponder:

  1. There are now more cell phones in the United States than people.
  2. Mobile devices will outnumber global population by the end of 2012.
  3. The typical adult checks their smart phone at least 30 times per day.
  4. The average teen sends more than 3,000 texts per month.
  5. There are currently 40,000 mobile health apps available and 247 million individuals have downloaded at least one to their mobile device.
  6. By 2020, at least 160 million Americans will be monitored and treated remotely for at least one chronic condition.

The rapid uptake of smart phones which are essentially computers on your hip, if developed correctly can create the “holy grail” of health care, an empowered patient with resources and tools to better manage their own health.

In the coming series I am going to address some of the key issues with the mHealth opportunity. Stay tuned.

June is Men’s Health Month

Okay guys, me included, June is National Men’s Health Month. Obviously with the start of summer we want to be ready for those great outdoor activities; in fact the summer is my favorite time of the year, boating, beaches, kayaking, boogie boarding, fishing, long days of sunshine, you name it, I’m ready.

So a few things we should all consider for this summer and over the longer term.  It’s never too late to change that diet, get a little bit more exercise or lose some weight.  While you’re at it this month, how about checking to see that you are up to date on all of your health screenings. You can use this widget here from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, just enter your age and gender, and there you have it, a list of recommended screenings, vaccines, etc. Then schedule your doctor’s appointment and get em done.

Remember also that skin cancer is an issue we should all be aware of, especially in the summer. Be sure to use appropriate sunblock and cover up whenever possible.  Here’s a good video on skin cancer:

So take some time in June during Men’s Health Month to take care of your health and then get out and enjoy the start of summer.

What has The Prevention Plan Done for Me?

I am now into my third year on The Prevention Plan, as good a time as any to provide you with an update of my progress. My Personal Prevention Plan now contains three years of Health Risk Assessment, Labs and biometric data. Each year I have become more involved in my plan and our company has become more active in creating a culture of health.  I can clearly see and feel a difference.

So what has improved?

I now try to work out every day, have dropped a fair amount of weight and improved my waist/hip ratio as well as some of my lab values.  According to The Prevention Plan I have improved to where I now have zero High Risk factors in any of the risks The Prevention Plan determines.  This is a nice improvement from year one when I had a few categories that were high risk.

Equally as important

May 18- National Employee Health and Fitness Day

Today is National Employee Health and Fitness Day. This is a great day to remind us of how interrelated health is with workforce productivity.

Numerous studies have documented the savings associated with a healthy workforce both in terms of direct medical costs as well as in improved productivity.  Healthier employees are more productive. Work by Dr. Dee Edington and others have shown that for every dollar one pays in health care costs, a company loses about three dollars in lost productivity. So Good Health is Good Business.

What can a company do to improve the health and fitness of its workforce?  Begin by looking at the organization, its culture, the health of its workforce. Look to an outside expert such as U.S. Preventive Medicine to help you build a program that meets your needs. As a small business, you can still get access to high quality programs. In fact The Prevention Plan is available through Sam’s Club.

You can also learn more through a series of blogs I wrote on selecting a program:

The State of Idaho Learns about The Prevention Plan

Recently Chris Fey our Chairman and CEO, Dr. Ron Loeppke our Vice Chairman and I had the privilege of meeting with Idaho’s health oriented Governor C. L. “Butch” Otter to discuss wellness, prevention and The Prevention Plan. Governor Otter is a very health conscious person, running on a daily basis, and clearly recognizes the importance of individuals maintaining and improving their health. After meeting with the Governor, he introduced us to his department heads and other key employees at a meeting in the Capitol where Chris and Ron made a presentation on “The Challenges to State Government”.  In this presentation you will find useful information on the value of health and the power of prevention.
