The iCAN Challenge and Maintaining Participation in a Wellness Program

Regularly scheduled and random challenges that are available to employees both individually and as teams are an important and effective way to keep participation rates up in a prevention or wellness program. Currently in The Prevention Plan we are involved in the iCAN Challenge. This is a fun 8 week weight loss challenge where employees at each company form teams.  Our team is called the Slimpossibles.

The challenge provides unique ideas each week on diet and exercise and the participants enter their weight on a weekly basis. For each pound lost or if the individual maintains their weight that week, they donate a can of food.  This food is in turn donated to a local food bank. Employees in our office are also posting pictures of iCANs on their office door; one for each pound lost; publicly documenting their weight loss to date.

The iCAN Challenge is a fun way to lose weight and help others in need at the same time. At U.S. Preventive Medicine we are more than half way through this challenge.  I’ll let you know how we did in a few weeks.
